In 2025, the HBA of Michigan is holding the first Leadership in Housing Advocacy Awards to celebrate individuals and organizations whose dedication to housing advocacy has had a positive impact across Michigan. Housing is more than construction and development — it is the foundation for thriving neighborhoods and economic growth. Through these awards, we aim to highlight those who champion innovative housing solutions, advocate for fair policies, and strengthen the neighborhoods of Michigan.

Award Categories

Workforce Development Advocate

Awarded to an individual, company, or group for the development and execution of successful programs, projects, or ideas that support the development and advancement of industry careers, aim to address labor shortages, and expand the number of qualified workers in the industry.

Community Impact

Awarded to an individual or group for the development, implementation and/or execution of successful programs, projects, events, or ideas that support community awareness, appreciation, and/or involvement of the local homebuilding industry.

Emerging Advocate

Recognizes the next generation of housing leaders—young professionals, students, recent graduates, and newcomers to the industry—who are making a significant impact in housing advocacy and community development. This award is dedicated to those individuals who are passionate about shaping the future of housing and are committed to championing responsible growth and innovative solutions within their communities.

YIMBY “Yes in My Backyard”

Honors local governments and communities that demonstrate outstanding support for the home-building industry by fostering strong partnerships, streamlining operations, and creating an environment where responsible development can thrive. This award recognizes municipalities and leaders who understand the critical role housing plays in building vibrant, sustainable communities and actively work to make the development and construction process efficient and collaborative. This may be awarded in tiers of small, medium, and large municipalities based on population if the nomination pool allows.

Champion of Housing

Presented to a legislator or public official who has demonstrated exemplary service for the enhancement of the building industry in Michigan.

Coalition of the Year: Better Together, Build Together

Honors a partnership of organizations, businesses, and stakeholders that have come together to advance the housing industry. This award recognizes exceptional collaboration in addressing key industry challenges resulting in meaningful, impactful solutions. These coalitions have strengthened the housing industry by uniting their expertise and efforts.

Outstanding Local HBA

Honors one local HBA and their EO that has demonstrated exceptional leadership in housing advocacy, community relations, and membership development. This award recognizes an HBA that goes above and beyond to promote responsible housing policies, engage in meaningful community initiatives, and foster growth within its membership.

Housing Advocate of the Year

Honors an individual or group who has demonstrated leadership and competence in efforts to promote and advocate for the homebuilding and remodeling industry. This nominee will possess the ability to empower or inspire others to engage in the industry.

Lifetime Achievement

Recognizes an HBAM member who has made significant long-term contributions to the HBAM, the building industry, and the community. We invite you to nominate a member that you believe is deserving of this special honor.

What is the process?

The Selection Committee will make its recommendation based on the evaluation of the nomination packages received. Each nomination package must include a completed application form, both the Nominee’s and Nominator’s contact information, credentials, and designations. Up to three additional letters of recommendation that speak to and support the nomination criteria may be submitted by any HBAM member.

Morality Clause

The Home Builders Association of Michigan (HBAM) is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct within the housing industry. All nominees, finalists, and award recipients must adhere to these principles as part of their eligibility for any HBAM award.

Ethical Conduct:

Nominees must demonstrate a consistent commitment to ethical behavior, both personally and professionally. Any conduct that compromises the integrity of the nominee or reflects negatively on HBAM, the housing industry, or the community will result in immediate disqualification from consideration.

Legal Compliance:

All award nominees must comply with local, state, and federal laws, as well as industry regulations. Any involvement in criminal activities, fraud, or violations of industry standards will render the nominee ineligible for an award.

Professional Standards:

Nominees must uphold the values of professionalism and respect in all business dealings. This includes fair treatment of employees, clients, partners, and communities. Any nominee found to have engaged in discriminatory practices, harassment, or unethical business practices will be disqualified.

Public Image:

As representatives of HBAM and the home-building industry, nominees must maintain a positive public image. Any behavior that damages the reputation of the nominee or the Association, including but not limited to public scandals, misconduct, or inappropriate actions, will lead to disqualification.

Ongoing Integrity:

HBAM reserves the right to revoke any award if, after recognition, the recipient engages in conduct that violates this morality clause. Awards are based not only on past achievements but also on an ongoing commitment to ethical and responsible leadership.

By submitting a nomination or accepting an award, nominees agree to abide by this morality clause and understand that failure to comply will result in immediate disqualification or revocation of recognition.
